The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, based in Carnesville, serves as the chief law enforcement agency across Franklin County in northeast Georgia, covering uniform patrol, criminal and narcotics investigations, civil process, security at the courthouse and the operation of the county jail. The sheriff's office and the county detention center share one site; records staff keep weekday hours, while emergency service runs around the clock all year. Its Sex Offender Registration and Tracking unit, known as SORT, handles registration and tracking duties for sex offenders and sexual predators who live or work in the county, registration is by weekday appointment, and the public can look up offenders through the Georgia Bureau of Investigation search tool. Records requests go through an online Open Records Form under the Georgia Open Records Act. Within three business days the office reports whether responsive records exist and can be released, as OCGA § 50-18-71 requires, and it replies in writing, by email when possible, with the cost to search, retrieve, redact and copy. The initial 15 minutes of staff time carry no charge, standard paper copies cost 10 cents a page, and payment is due when records are received.
