In Hancock County, Indiana, law enforcement at the county level falls to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office. Its sworn work is divided among Patrol, Investigation and Jail divisions, all operating under the sheriff's authority. A volunteer Reserve Division adds sworn reserve officers, empowered by the sheriff, who help preserve law and order across the county alongside full-time deputies. That reserve program dates to the 1950s, when it was created as the Sheriff's Civil Defense Reserves and also provided basic EMT services. The office describes its mission as improving residents' quality of life through proactive, community-involved programs, and it pursues public safety through enforcement, intervention and education while holding its members to standards of fairness, respect, compassion and accountability.
