Ten divisions make up the Lyon County Sheriff's Office in Emporia, Kansas, an unusually broad mix that includes animal control and the county's emergency management program alongside traditional law enforcement. Patrol deputies cover the unincorporated parts of the county, answering calls, enforcing traffic and criminal law and often arriving first at emergencies, while investigators develop cases through evidence collection and witness interviews for prosecution, and a Special Response Team handles armed standoffs, barricaded subjects and high-risk warrants. Courthouse deputies screen everyone entering the Lyon County District Courthouse, secure hearings from traffic court to murder trials and serve warrants in the building, with some also working as bike patrol, Simunitions or firearms instructors. Civil process staff serve summonses, subpoenas, protection and stalking orders and eviction writs. The office runs a 163-bed adult detention center staffed by 40 detention officers, five food service workers and in-house health services available 80 hours a week, and visits there are by scheduled video only. Animal Control answers stray and dangerous-animal calls and investigates welfare reports across the county.
