With more than 100 officers, the Covington Police Department provides a full range of police services across a city it describes as the "Gateway to the South." Covington had an estimated 41,847 residents in 2025, the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 series shows. The Patrol Bureau is the department's biggest, staffed every hour of the year across four shifts plus a Traffic Unit that also takes in civilian cadets and the rangers who work Devou Park. In the Criminal Investigations Bureau, investigators and civilian lab technicians take on crimes against people and property, while its Domestic Abuse Response Team concentrates on child abuse, adult abuse, juvenile and domestic cases. A Community Liaison & Intelligence Unit works alongside residents, businesses, neighborhood groups, schools and other city departments to link people with resources and solve quality-of-life problems together. Certified officers are recruited and hired under Kentucky Law Enforcement Council standards. Crime data is shown on a free public map through RAIDS Online. Incident reports are generally ready three to four days after filing; people involved get a copy free, and others pay 10 cents a page through an open records request.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Covington city, KY has an estimated population of 40,902.
