Andover, Massachusetts, is served by a police department accredited through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, which means it agrees to regular assessments and to correct any deficiencies the assessors find. Uniformed patrol officers provide coverage at all hours and handle initial investigations and traffic enforcement, detectives process crime scenes and oversee firearms permits, and officers also use all-terrain vehicles, bicycle patrol in the Center Business District and K-9 teams. A Support Services Division includes a traffic unit and records, and officers take part in the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, a regional group of municipal police and sheriff agencies, through its hostage negotiation, K-9, motor and regional response units.
