The Lake County Sheriff's Office in Minnesota enforces county, state and federal law under duties set by Minnesota Statute 387.03, investigating crimes and crashes, arresting suspects, serving civil papers and enforcing court orders. Deputies work from three duty stations: Two Harbors, home of the Law Enforcement Center, Silver Bay and Fall Lake at the edge of the Boundary Waters. Arrow, a K9 that joined the office in June 2020, can detect narcotics, track people and search for articles. The office also operates the county jail, which also holds inmates for Cook, St. Louis and other nearby counties, and the 911 dispatch center, where cross-trained dispatcher and corrections staff page ambulance, fire and rescue services countywide and dispatch for Silver Bay and Two Harbors. A volunteer Rescue Squad helps search for lost or missing people and responds to water emergencies. Applications for a permit to carry a pistol are filed in person; a new permit costs $100, requires training from a BCA-certified instructor within 12 months and is valid for five years. Serving a summons or subpoena costs $75, orders for protection and harassment orders are served free, and the office posts a warrant list and foreclosure sales.
