The Greene County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina describes its purpose as making Greene County a place where people can live, work and prosper in safety, in partnership with citizens and under high ethical, professional and legal standards. Its detention center can house female inmates and brings in revenue by renting spare beds to neighboring counties and through the State Misdemeanor Confinement Program, under which the state pays the county to hold people sentenced for misdemeanor crimes. Families can send mail to inmates at a posted mailing address. The office handles concealed handgun permits, which state law requires residents to obtain from the sheriff of their home county (N.C. Gen. Stat. 14-415.13); applicants book and pay for an appointment ahead of time, and the required background checks can take several weeks. A new permit costs $90, fingerprinting included, and a renewal costs $75, with renewals accepted no earlier than 90 days before expiration; anyone whose permit lapsed more than 60 days earlier must retake the handgun training course and apply again as a new applicant. Fingerprinting for jobs and background checks is limited to county residents, Monday through Thursday, for a $10 fee.
