Along the central Oregon coast, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office takes on duties that in many counties belong to separate departments. Besides a patrol division that enforces criminal and traffic laws countywide and a jail that aims to keep a safe, secure and healthy environment where people in custody are treated with dignity, the office runs the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, which for more than 60 years has been the only shelter for animals in need in the community. It also houses county emergency management, which operates the Lincoln Alerts notification system. That system lets public safety, city, tribal and county officials warn residents and visitors about severe weather, distant tsunamis, road closures, missing persons and possible wildfires; landlines are enrolled automatically, and people can opt in to texts, email and app alerts for each member of their household. A support services division handles civil process, court-order enforcement, public records, property and evidence, and the release or disposal of firearms. The office publishes a weekly safety tip, such as a September 2026 reminder that Oregon drivers must stop for a school bus flashing red lights regardless of direction, including on multi-lane roads like Highway 101.
