Rustburg is the base of the Campbell County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies police all of Campbell County, Virginia, Altavista and Brookneal included, and also secure courtrooms, enforce county ordinances and serve civil papers and criminal warrants. Records from the state Department of Criminal Justice Services show the office has held accreditation from Virginia's Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission since 1999, and its seventh award was marked by a reaccreditation certificate presented in October 2024. A school resource officer is posted at every public elementary, middle and high school in the county, teaching students about drugs, state law, safe driving and online safety. Its Operations Bureau holds the Field, Resource Services, Support Services and Community Relations divisions along with a Crime Suppression and Traffic Unit and the county's crime analyst, and some deputies work undercover drug cases or with special operations teams. An Administrative Services Bureau oversees recruiting, training, risk management and the Criminal Investigations Division. The office puts particular emphasis on drug and alcohol enforcement, belongs to Central Virginia Crime Stoppers, supports Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch groups, and is a Project Lifesaver member, sending trained teams to find wandering adults and children with Alzheimer's disease, autism or similar conditions.
