Berkeley County Sheriff's Office

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, founded in 1865 and based in Martinsburg, West Virginia, polices the county and answers calls ranging from civil disputes, alarms and motorist assists to domestic violence, burglaries, sexual assaults and homicides. Deputies also provide security for circuit and family court and serve as school resource officers, and the sheriff oversees the county Tax Office, Animal Control and a Volunteer Deputy Reserve Program. Every deputy has taken a Tri-County Oath that lets them assist neighboring West Virginia jurisdictions, and the office assigns deputies to a U.S. Marshals task force and the Eastern Panhandle's drug and violent crime task force, while sitting on the county's multidisciplinary investigation and sexual assault response teams. Its highway safety work includes car-seat installations, Click It or Ticket seat belt campaigns and DUI patrols, and West Virginia's Governor's Highway Safety Program named it a top DUI enforcement agency in September 2024. Deputies carry Kids Kits from the Martinsburg Initiative for children caught up in traumatic calls, send Handle with Care alerts to schools, and can refer qualifying offenders to the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion program at the Berkeley County Day Report Center instead of jail. An online activity page is updated daily.
