The Alabama Department of Public Safety is the uniformed arm of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the state's consolidated law enforcement agency, headquartered in Montgomery. The department is made up of sworn and non-sworn uniformed personnel and includes the Highway Patrol, Marine Patrol and Driver License divisions. Most of the state's sworn troopers serve in the Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol divisions, where they enforce state law and patrol Alabama's roadways and waterways statewide, and they also assist local, county, state and federal agencies on joint initiatives. The Driver License Division, staffed mostly by non-sworn personnel, administers written and skills tests for every class of Alabama driver license and maintains the related records, including crash reports and traffic conviction records. In an emergency, dial 911.
