Patrol, emergency medical care, 911 dispatch and the county jail all sit under the Alger County Sheriff's Office in Michigan, whose front office is open around the clock. Deputies handle traffic enforcement and criminal investigations and also patrol the county's waters, off-road vehicle trails and snowmobile routes. The office runs an Advanced Life Support ambulance system, backed by medical responders in outlying areas, and its dispatch center can take Smart911 profiles. Rescue 21, a team that now covers Burt Township as well, pairs sheriff's employees with community volunteers for boat, hovercraft, four-wheel-drive, snowmobile, extraction, dive and search-and-rescue calls. The Alger County Jail also holds inmates from neighboring Luce County under a housing agreement, and it works with the Alger Correctional Facility on meal service. D.A.R.E. lessons returned to local schools in 2022, a K9 program works alongside patrol, and the office has added a chaplain, school resource officers, community corrections and emergency management support to its list of services for county residents and visitors.
