Allegheny County Police Department

Nine county parks plus two airports, Pittsburgh International and the Allegheny County Airport, form the patrol beat of the Allegheny County Police Department, which investigates all crime on county-owned property and lends help to local, state and federal agencies. It answers to the Allegheny County Manager. District 1 is based at the international airport, District 2 works from South Park and covers the county airport, and District 3 operates from North Park. The Detective Division, made up of General Investigations, Homicide and Narcotics, investigates cases throughout the county. Specialty units draw officers from patrol and detective ranks: a Bomb Squad founded in 1975 that also responds in 13 surrounding counties through Region 13, a SCUBA dive team, SWAT, a bicycle unit, and a Mounted Patrol dating to 1932. Explosives detection K-9 teams and a narcotics detection dog work mostly at the airport. The county's Police Training Academy in North Park delivers the state's 919-hour basic recruit curriculum and in-service training, and since 2004 the department has helped run Camp Cadet, a one-week camp for county youth ages 12 to 14.
