Originally known as High Land and later as Burgdorff Siding, the town was renamed in 1897 after Alexander Ault, a local hero who saved the agricultural community from financial ruin by purchasing the entire grain harvest during a time of economic hardship. Much of the town's residential area and surrounding farmland sits on land initially given by the United States government to the railroad for construction financing.
