Deputies with the Bonner County Sheriff's Office in Idaho divide their work among road patrol, a county detention center, a seasonal marine division and a records section that answers written report requests. Patrol is usually where the public meets the office: deputies look into reported crimes, enforce traffic law, serve arrest warrants and court papers, collect prisoners held in other jurisdictions and direct traffic for fire and ambulance crews every day of the year. The detention center, opened in 1998, houses, feeds and transports people in custody, hands out medication and commissary, and runs work release, inmate labor, a chaplain corps, NA and AA meetings and GED classes, while its custody division covers jail training, transport and classification. Marine deputies, many hired for the season, inspect vessels, investigate boating crashes, carry out water rescues and recoveries and teach boater safety on Lake Pend Oreille, Priest Lake and long stretches of river that feed and drain them. Trained volunteers back up sworn and civilian staff, residents may file anonymous non-emergency crime reports online, and concealed carry applications are handed out at the front desk.
