Brown University Department of Public Safety

Brown University's Department of Public Safety, now titled Public Safety and Emergency Management, is the campus police agency for Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Its sworn officers attend a state-certified academy and are licensed as Rhode Island special police officers. Their jurisdiction covers the Brown campus and the streets and highways next to it, where they can enforce state law and City of Providence ordinances in addition to university rules; calls elsewhere in the city belong to local municipal police. The department staffs its own dispatch center around the clock and is accredited by CALEA, the national law-enforcement accreditation commission. Hugh Clements is Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Management and Chief of Police. For non-emergency public-safety help on campus, call (401) 863-3322 or email [email protected]. For a police, fire or medical emergency on campus, call (401) 863-4111, which is answered 24 hours a day, or dial 911.
