Louisiana DPS Police Capitol Detail

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety Police Capitol Detail is a commissioned DPS Police unit that patrols the State Capitol Complex in Baton Rouge and provides police protection at state buildings. DPS Police was established in 1974 to support the Louisiana State Police mission, and the Legislature created the Capitol Detail in 1996. The Capitol Complex includes the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion and is bounded by Main Street, the Mississippi River, Choctaw Drive, and the Kansas City Southern Railway tracks. Officers also work special events including Mardi Gras parades, festivals, and legislative sessions. The section maintains the only bicycle patrol unit in the State Police. In 2010 the Capitol Detail expanded coverage to state buildings in New Orleans, Harvey, Lafayette, Alexandria, Shreveport, and Monroe. Captain J. Lyons Hale III commands the Capitol Detail, with Lt. Chad Higginbotham as executive officer. The section phone is 225-219-4410. Capitol Detail and State Facilities Security are located at 1835 N. River Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
