Fairfax County Police Department

Nine district stations, from Reston and McLean to Mount Vernon and Lorton, anchor patrol for the Fairfax County Police Department, headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. Its Operations Support Bureau adds a Helicopter Division for aerial support, search-and-rescue and medevac flights, a Special Response Unit that covers bomb disposal, marine patrol and underwater recovery, SWAT, K-9 teams, and a Traffic Division that enforces motor carrier safety and investigates crashes alongside a Motor Squad. A Real Time Crime Center, opened in April 2024, pulls together camera feeds, drones, license plate readers and analytics around the clock, and residents and businesses can register or connect their security cameras through Connect Fairfax County. Patrol officers train in a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team course, and since 2016 a Co-Responder Program has paired CIT-trained officers with Community Services Board crisis specialists on behavioral health calls. School resource officers have served in county schools since 1995, and beginning in fall 2026 the department staffs 52 SROs and four supervisors in high, secondary and middle schools. Recruits and veteran officers train at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy, chartered in 1985, which also serves the sheriff's office and the Vienna and Herndon police departments.
