The Fond du Lac Police Department is the tribal law enforcement agency of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, serving the Fond du Lac Reservation in northeastern Minnesota from its Law Enforcement Center at 930 Trettel Lane in Cloquet. The department traces its start to 1998, when Officer Roger (Bouda) Smith Sr. served as a one-person agency and helped build its policies and secure state licensure for reservation officers. Today every officer holds both a state and a tribal police license, and the department provides service around the clock, seven days a week. Its staff includes patrol officers, a K-9 unit, and administrative personnel, along with a school resource officer assigned to the Fond du Lac Ojibwe Schools, an officer who serves as a victims of crime advocate, and three officers dedicated to investigations who work alongside neighboring agencies. Calls are dispatched through both the St. Louis County and Carlton County 911 centers. A five-member Law Enforcement Review Committee, created in 2007, meets publicly each month. The office is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 218-878-8040; for an immediate response, dial 911.
