From its headquarters in the Marathon County Courthouse in Wausau, Wisconsin, the Marathon County Sheriff's Office is organized into five divisions: administration, communications, corrections, investigations and patrol. Patrol deputies enforce state motor vehicle law, investigate traffic crashes, including reconstruction when needed, take the first look at property crimes, crimes against persons and sudden deaths, and provide security at special events. Grant-funded recreational patrols on trails, lakes, reservoirs and rivers enforce Department of Natural Resources rules and investigate ATV, boat and snowmobile crashes, and the office is the county's primary provider of safety courses for ATV riders, boaters, hunters and snowmobilers. Dispatchers in the Communications Division take every E-911 call placed in Marathon County around the clock, page and radio-dispatch municipal police, fire and EMS agencies, sound the tornado sirens and send out special teams such as SWAT, the bomb squad and the dive team. The Corrections Division runs the county jail, which sits inside the courthouse, opened in 1988 and received a 120-bed addition in 2000, plus a separate, secure juvenile detention facility and an electronic monitoring program that lets minimum-risk inmates serve their time on in-home detention. Detectives in the Investigations Division handle criminal cases within the office's jurisdiction.
