Mills County Sheriff's Office is the chief law-enforcement agency for Mills County, Iowa, headquartered in Glenwood. The sheriff covers the unincorporated parts of the county directly and also provides police service to towns that contract with the office. Running the county jail is only one part of the job: the sheriff also conducts special investigations into alleged violations when the county attorney directs, issues all gun permits in the county, and oversees the county drug task force. The office has a long history, with its first elected sheriff taking office on August 31, 1851, and the county records one officer who died in the line of duty. People seeking employment must pass a civil service examination with both a written exam and a physical agility test.
