Road patrol, a detective bureau and the county jail form the core of the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office in Michigan. Patrol deputies are hired during set application periods, either already certified by the state's police standards commission (MCOLES) or as recruits, while corrections deputies must meet standards set by the state's sheriffs' coordinating and training council. The jail in Stanton opened on March 1, 2002, with 119 beds and grew through a 2003 remodel and a 2006 renovation to 205 beds. Bonds can be paid in cash or by card at a lobby kiosk or online, and money orders may be mailed with the inmate's name or number. Registered sex offenders report to the jail to confirm and update their addresses on Monday through Thursday mornings, as required by Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act (MCL 28.721 et seq.). Fingerprinting and gun purchase permits have their own hours. Residents leaving home can ask for a vacation house check, and tips can go through Silent Observer. Each Thursday the office conducts mortgage foreclosure sales at the judicial complex without guaranteeing clear title, and records requests go through the Freedom of Information Act (MCL 15.231 et seq.).
