Northport's police department in Alabama runs a patrol division on day and night shifts that answers calls, writes field reports, enforces traffic laws, investigates accidents and carries out community-oriented policing every day of the week. A tactical unit, which trains each month, is called on for hostage negotiations, barricaded subjects, civil unrest and high-risk warrant service. The Criminal Investigation Division looks into property crimes and the abuse of juveniles and elders, oversees housing services and crime prevention, and serves as liaison for city investigators assigned to two regional teams, a violent crimes unit for Tuscaloosa County and a West Alabama narcotics task force that joins Tuscaloosa police, the county sheriff and the University of Alabama's public safety department. A traffic division focuses on accident investigation and reconstruction. Through the Citizen Observer Program, approved residents who pass a background check can ride along with officers. The Community Relations Division plans programs under the motto Your Police, Our Community, detectives help residents start Neighborhood Watch groups, and child passenger safety seat checks take place twice a month at a city fire station.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Northport city, AL has an estimated population of 30,991.
