Pitman Police Department

Pitman, a Gloucester County borough in New Jersey, appointed its first police chief in 1876, and by 1903 the town had its first multi-officer force when a town marshal joined the chief. The department's own history describes a habit of being early to new tools: it was the first agency in the area to use two-way radios, earning the designation District One, one of the first to issue semi-automatic sidearms, one of the original users of VASCAR speed timing, and an early adopter of aggressive bicycle patrols and community policing. Today the full-service department, headquartered in the borough's municipal building on South Broadway, fields a Detective Bureau, a K-9 Unit supported by community fundraisers such as a food truck event, a Traffic Safety Unit and a School Resource Officer Unit, and it teaches the LEAD program to local students. An accreditation manager oversees professional standards, and officers serve as liaisons to the Chamber of Commerce, the LGBTQIA+ community and the borough's DEI committee. Residents can safely discard unused medication in the Project Medicine Drop box, and the department hosts a Community Appreciation Day.
