When the Powder Springs Police Department was established in 1938, it had exactly one police officer. Today it serves a west Cobb County, Georgia city of about 21,000 residents (2025 Census estimate), plus commuters and visitors. The department is organized into two bureaus. Field Operations covers patrol, a special operations unit, officers assigned to local and federal task forces, and the police cadets, while Administration handles criminal investigations, internal affairs, community outreach, records, evidence and property control, and training and recruitment. Its Cadet Unit #145, rebranded in 2023 under the Public Safety Cadets program, is open to young people ages 14 to 20 who meet four times a month, earn rank through participation and attendance, and study police ethics, criminal and traffic law, criminal procedure, public relations and traffic direction. On the street, the Field Operations Bureau fields two K-9 officers, two detectives and 12 patrol officers under captains, lieutenants and sergeants, working 12-hour day and night watches, while the special operations unit enforces city ordinances, runs specialized traffic enforcement and backs up patrol when calls stack up. Non-emergency calls are routed through Cobb County 911.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Powder Springs city, GA has an estimated population of 17,414.
