One department, the Riley County Police Department, serves the citizens of Manhattan and Riley County, Kansas, and its oversight comes from the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency, commonly called the Law Board. It has about 222 authorized full-time positions, 110 of them sworn officers and 112 civilian employees, and it also operates the Riley County Jail, a 147-bed direct supervision correctional facility. It calls itself an evidence-based policing agency that practices community engagement, was reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in March 2024 with Meritorious status, and keeps a Community Advisory Board that can serve as a liaison with the public. Emergency dispatchers are the first point of contact in a crisis, and residents can call or text 911. Some crimes that involve no weapons, hazardous materials, threats to public safety or stolen vehicles can be reported online. Incident reports cost $5 each by mail or in person, and crash reports filed since January 1, 2018, other than fatal crashes, can be bought online through CARFAX. The department also publishes an active warrants list, and anyone with a warrant can turn themselves in at headquarters day or night.
