Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office

Formed in 1778, the Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office in Virginia serves Rockbridge County together with the City of Lexington. Deputies work closely with the Virginia State Police, the police departments of Buena Vista, Lexington and the Town of Glasgow, and the campus police and public safety departments of Lexington's two colleges, including the Virginia Military Institute Police Department. Staff work in patrol, investigations, civil process, court security, support and administration. Patrol deputies answer calls sent from the 911 center and cover the county at all hours on 12-hour rotating shifts that include weekends; between calls they back up other agencies, enforce traffic laws, follow up on open cases and target crime patterns in particular neighborhoods. An investigations squad takes on follow-up work on more serious cases. K-9 deputies handle regular patrol duties while also training and caring for their dogs, which live at home with the handler's family. The office also runs community outreach programs meant to raise public awareness of and participation in public safety, and residents can consult the Code of Rockbridge County and the Code of Virginia online.
