The Sac County Sheriff's Office is the law enforcement agency for Sac County, Iowa, working from the county courthouse in Sac City, with deputies patrolling the countryside as well as the cities of Schaller, Nemaha, Early, Lytton, Auburn and Odebolt. Dispatch and the county jail both operate around the clock. A civil division delivers original notices, garnishments, protective orders and other writs, carries out evictions, handles involuntary commitments for mental illness or substance abuse, assists with condemnations of private property and conducts sheriff's sales, which the office cautions are buyer beware and best approached with an attorney's advice. Jail visits take place in person by appointment from Tuesday through Saturday, and the office takes fingerprints both for non-criminal purposes and under court order. Crash and incident reports can be requested from the sheriff's window at the courthouse. Livestock owners can enroll their pasture locations and emergency contacts so the communications center can reach them quickly when cattle, hogs or horses wander onto a road, and crime victims can track an offender's custody status through the free VINE notification service.
