MARY'S COUNTY, MARYLAND EXECUTIVE BRANCH PUBLIC SAFETY ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES In Fiscal Year 2012, the Department of Emergency Services merged with the Department of Information Technology to form the Department of Emergency Services and Technology. In November 2017, the merger was undone when the Department of Emergency Services again was made into a separate agency apart from the Department of Information Technology. Today, the Department of Emergency Services coordinates emergency response efforts, and oversees volunteer fire and rescue companies operating in the County. Working with federal, State and local government agencies, the Department acts to prevent and respond to natural and man-made emergencies. On recommendation of the Board of County Commissioners, the Governor appoints the Department's Director (Code Public Safety Article, sec. Dial 911 for emergencies.
