Online services include a permit to carry application, the current inmate roster, deposits to inmate accounts, a list of properties set for sheriff's sale and a Flock camera transparency portal. Sex offender registrations take place Monday through Thursday by appointment. Landline 911 calls from the county reach the sheriff's own 9-1-1 center, while calls placed inside Ames city limits are answered by the Ames center. A Citizen's Academy walks participants through the budget, crime scene work, firearms safety, the jail and the communications center, and includes patrol ride-alongs.
