The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is the state regulatory agency that licenses and sets minimum education, training, and proficiency standards for Texas peace officers, county jailers, public security officers, and telecommunicators. Created by the 59th Texas Legislature and effective August 30, 1965, the commission is headquartered at 6330 East Highway 290, STE 200, in Austin. The public may reach the main office at (512) 936-7700 or [email protected]. TCOLE’s mission is to establish and enforce standards so the people of Texas are served by highly trained and ethical law enforcement, corrections, and telecommunications personnel. A nine-member commission appointed by the governor oversees the agency, and Executive Director Gregory Stevens leads day-to-day operations. The commission adopts licensing and training rules, works through approved academies and contractual training providers, issues proficiency certificates, and enforces standards statewide.
