Weber County Sheriff's Office

Every boating season since July 1, 2002, a two-deputy, one-sergeant Marine Patrol team from the Weber County Sheriff's Office has policed Pineview Reservoir, a mountain lake east of Ogden. From as early as April into early October the team teaches boating laws, helps stranded boaters, patrols swim areas, enforces boating-under-the-influence laws and investigates boating accidents, working with federal and state partners. Search and rescue has deeper roots. It began around 1945 with the Sheriff's Mounted Posse, organized during World War II as a homeland guard, and today a volunteer team overseen by three deputy liaisons answers 20 to 30 calls a year for stranded climbers, missing children, lost hunters, snowmobilers, skiers, drowning victims and downed aircraft in every season. On the highways, a Commercial Truck Enforcement Unit formed in 1999 uses deputies certified by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to inspect trucks and pull hazardous vehicles off the road. In corrections, the Kiesel Avenue facility, built in 1983 as the county jail, now houses work release and community service inmates, while the main correctional facility offers medication-assisted treatment and a reentry team that provides case management, peer support and links to housing, healthcare and jobs.
