Will County Sheriff's Office has policed Will County, Illinois, since the county was formed in 1836, growing from a single six-inmate cell into a corrections operation sized for roughly 1,000 inmates after its 2009 expansion. Under the Illinois Counties Code, 55 ILCS 5, the sheriff keeps the courthouse and jail (sec. 3-6017), serves and carries out warrants, process, orders and judgments (sec. 3-6019), acts as a conservator of the peace (sec. 3-6021) and supervises public safety (sec. 3-6035). Patrol deputies work around the clock with jurisdiction throughout the county and focus on unincorporated areas. The Records Section keeps incident and crash reports for those areas and the countywide registered sex offender list; copies carry a minimum $5 fee, and crash reports can also be viewed online through Appriss. Sex offender, violent offender and murderer registration is by appointment on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Residents can file online police reports, request house watches or extra patrol, report traffic complaints and submit FOIA requests and crime tips. A long-running volunteer Auxiliary supports deputies, and a Citizens Police Academy introduces residents to the office's work.
