The York County Sheriff's Office, which operates as the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, serves both York County and neighboring Poquoson, Virginia, and its mission statement centers on reducing crime, protecting people and property, and keeping public trust through professional, accountable service. The office publishes weekly arrest and incident reports, a wanted persons list and Crime in Virginia data for York County. Residents can pay or contest school speed zone summonses online, request vacation house checks, apply for concealed handgun permits and report crimes through an online form. A courthouse order on portable electronic devices took effect July 1, 2026. Community programs include free door scope viewers installed for senior citizens; Project Lifesaver, which gives tracking transmitters to people prone to wandering because of dementia, Alzheimer's, autism or a similar diagnosis, with deputies replacing batteries monthly; and a free four-week Sheriff's Business Academy for owners, managers and faith-based groups, covering patrol techniques, white-collar crime, workplace violence, robbery prevention, business watch, site surveys, 911 communications and crisis planning. Graduates must attend at least six of eight sessions. A Citizen's Advisory Committee formed in 2020 links residents with the office.
