New Hampshire Police Department to Acquire Drones Through Federal Grant

The Salem, New Hampshire Police Department is set to enhance its search and rescue operations with the acquisition of drones, thanks to a federal grant. The police department has been looking into the potential of drones for the past two and a half years, observing the successful use of this technology by other agencies such as the Derry Police, New Hampshire Fish and Game, and Southern New Hampshire Special Operations Unit.

The drone program, which will primarily aid in locating missing persons and children, is being funded by a $42,913 grant awarded in October 2021 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security. The grant was managed by the New Hampshire Department of Safety.

According to Captain Jason Smith of the Salem Police, the drones will not only be used for search missions but also for surveillance during large town events like the Fourth of July celebration or Salem Holiday Parade. In addition, the drones could assist in documenting major car crashes, crime scenes, and tactical deployments for hostage situations or barricaded subjects.

"We envision all of these scenarios likely drone deployment situations," Smith said.

The department plans to launch the drone unit within three to six months. Members have already been selected for the unit and have undergone preliminary training. Once the drones arrive, the team members will receive additional training on the new equipment.
