The Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) training is an extensive program intended to train law enforcement officers on the detection, apprehension, and investigation of impaired drivers. The program is designed to increase knowledge and skills in the area of alcohol and drug-impaired driving enforcement.
The program consists of sixteen hours of classroom instruction which covers topics such as: cognitive impairments, physiology of alcohol/drugs, signs/symptoms, Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMT), Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE), Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST), breathalyzer operation, legal issues related to impaired driving, advanced interviewing techniques for impaired drivers, crash investigations involving impairment, post crash investigations involving impairment, proactive DWI tactics and strategies, roadside assessments and other topics.
In addition to the classroom instruction students participate in hands-on activities including role playing scenarios conducted by instructors who have been trained through ARIDE. These activities allow participants to practice conducting DRE evaluations and SFSTs on volunteer subjects while receiving feedback from experienced trainers.
At the conclusion of the course all students must pass a written examination covering all aspects of impaired driving enforcement before they can be certified as having completed ARIDE training. Upon successful completion of this course students will receive an ARIDE certificate as well as continuing education credits.
