The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) SFST Practitioner Refresher (4-hours) training is designed to provide law enforcement officers and NHTSA instructors with a comprehensive review of the SFST knowledge and skills required for effective vehicular investigations. The course is divided into two parts. Part one covers standardized field sobriety test (SFST) knowledge and skills for administration, documentation, and interpretation. Part two provides additional instruction on other factors such as drug recognition, toxicology, breath testing, interviewing techniques, courtroom testimony, and more.
The SFST Practitioner Refresher course presents a comprehensive review of the three tests used in the Standardized Field Sobriety Test battery: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk-and-Turn (WAT), and One-Leg Stand (OLS). Participants will receive instruction on how to accurately administer the tests as well as how to interpret indicators that may be indicative of impairment.
Participants will also learn about other factors involved in conducting vehicular investigations such as drug recognition evaluation (DRE), toxicology overviews, breath testing overviews, interview techniques, report writing, court testimony guidance, legal updates from experienced court personnel, case scenarios from actual incidents encountered by practitioners during their work assignments, etc.
At the conclusion of each four hour class participants will have a comprehensive understanding of SFST Knowledge & Skills for administration; documentation; interpretation; drug recognition evaluation technique; toxicology overviews; breath testing overviews; interview techniques; report writing guidelines; court testimony guidance and case scenarios used to assess their mastery of material presented during the class sessions.
