The Texas DPS Arrest and Control Course, Technical Tuesdays: Fighting From Bottom Principals is an ACT course designed for law enforcement professionals looking to enhance their skills in handling suspects who are mounted on top of them. This course focuses specifically on two techniques - the Trap/Roll and Escape/Recover Guard - that will enable officers to effectively defend themselves and regain control in situations where they are pinned to the ground.
During this course, participants will learn the fundamentals of fighting from the bottom position, including proper body positioning, leverage points, and effective use of strength. They will also develop a deeper understanding of how to anticipate an attacker's movements and respond accordingly. Through interactive demonstrations and hands-on exercises, participants will gain practical experience in applying both the Trap/Roll and Escape/Recover Guard techniques.
The Trap/Roll technique teaches officers how to use their opponent's momentum against them by trapping their arm or leg and using it as a leverage point to roll them off. This technique is particularly useful when dealing with larger or stronger suspects who have mounted on top. Participants will learn different variations of this technique, allowing them to adapt it to different scenarios they may encounter in the field.
The Escape/Recover Guard technique focuses on creating space between the officer and their attacker while being mounted from above. This technique involves using specific movements and body positioning to create leverage and escape from underneath the attacker. Officers will also learn how to transition into a more advantageous position once they have escaped from underneath their attacker.
In addition to learning these two fundamental techniques, participants in this course will also receive training on safety measures when executing these techniques in real-life situations. This includes understanding potential risks involved with each move and how to minimize them while still maintaining control over the situation.
At the end of this course, officers will have a comprehensive understanding of fighting from bottom principals when dealing with a subject mounted on top. They will also have developed the skills and confidence to effectively defend themselves and regain control in high-risk scenarios. This course is an essential component of any law enforcement professional's training, equipping them with the necessary tools to handle potentially dangerous situations in the field.
